Complete Guide to CGPA Conversion (State-Wise)

Understanding how your university calculates percentage is crucial for job applications and higher education. Different states in India follow different formulas. Below is the detailed breakdown.

1. West Bengal Universities

West Bengal has a diverse set of universities with varying CBCS regulations.

  • WB MAKAUT (formerly WBUT): For Engineering (B.Tech) and Pharmacy, the formula is strictly Percentage = (DGPA - 0.75) × 10. This is unique because it subtracts 0.75 from the Degree GPA.
  • WB Bankura University: For most undergraduate CBCS courses, Bankura University follows the standard 10-point conversion: Percentage = CGPA × 10. However, check your specific department rules as some arts courses may use the -0.5 deduction.
  • WB Kalyani University & Vidyasagar University: These universities often use the deduction formula for CBCS: Percentage = (CGPA × 10) - 5 or simply (CGPA - 0.5) × 10.
  • WB Calcutta University: The CBCS regulation states Percentage = (CGPA × 10) - 5.

2. Bihar & Uttar Pradesh

  • Bihar Aryabhatta Knowledge University (AKU): Used for all engineering colleges in Bihar. The calculation is straightforward: CGPA × 10.
  • UP AKTU (Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical Univ): Formerly UPTU, they follow the simple CGPA × 10 rule for converting grades to percentage.

3. Karnataka (VTU)

Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) is the gold standard for engineering in Karnataka. Be careful: Do not use the simple *10 formula.

  • Formula: Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10
  • Example: If your CGPA is 8.0, your percentage is (8.0 - 0.75) * 10 = 72.5%.

4. Maharashtra (Mumbai & Pune)

  • MH Mumbai University: Uses a graduated scale. Roughly, it is 7.1 × CGPA + 11. If your CGPA is 7, percentage = (7.1*7)+11 = 60.7%.
  • MH SPPU (Pune University): Uses a weighted formula often approximated as CGPA × 8.8 for lower grades and higher multipliers for higher grades.

5. South India (Tamil Nadu & Kerala)

  • TN Anna University: Simple and student-friendly: CGPA × 10.
  • KL KTU (APJ Abdul Kalam Technological Univ): Also follows the standard CGPA × 10 conversion.
  • KL Calicut University: Generally uses CGPA × 9.5 for percentage estimation in degree certificates.
